Customs, hair styles and automobiles have changed since these pictures were taken; so have our philanthropic programs as well as the newspaper coverage of our programs.  The focus of newspaper articles about Assistance League these days is on our work in the Tucson community rather than on our apparel.  Times have changed for the better!!  Enjoy this stroll through the past when Woman's View was a section of the newspaper.

January 1960.  Three member of the Service League of Tucson, (left to right) Mrs. Samuel H. Woods, Mrs. Wallace Diers, recording secretary; and Mrs. Gilbert /C. Hespen, vice president; prepare invitations to patrons for the approaching benefit exhibit, "Informal Elegance for the Southwest."  Dates of the exhibit are Mar. 12-14 in the Pioneer Hotel Ballroom.  Under the sponsorship of the league in cooperation with the National Society of Interior Designers, the exhibit will feature completely furnished room displays and unusual table settings.  Proceeds from the show will be used to help establish the Homemaker Service, a Service League project.  The league is a non-political, non-sectarian, voluntary, woman's philanthropic organization.  It was started in Tucson in May, 1959.

Mrs. Robert MacCartee (left), tea dance chairman, and Mrs. Robert Gibson, ways and means chairman, go over the Service League tea dance patron list which they plan to close out this weekend.  The dance - set for Dec. 15, 1963 at the Pioneer Hotel - will benefit the league's pet project, Homemaker Service.

Also appearing in the Women section is an article by Betty Milburn about the tea dance, the article is transcribed as follows:

"Don we now our gay apparel..."

And of course the gayest apparel of the holiday season will be seen at the Service League Tea Dance tomorrow.  What a pretty party it always is!  The Service League boasts a number of members on the Ten Best Dressed list.

Prexy Grace Lovell will wear a rose red brocade gown with matching coat and shoes.  Sitting with Grace and Mitch will be the Frank Kidds, Dan Kinerks, Robert McCarthys, Ray Rodigs and Bern Van Der Kerks.

Dance chairman Nancy MacCartee will be gowned in a white brocade sheath as she and Bob and Sam and Henley Woods entertain Sam and Bud Crary, the Conner Creighs, String and Lib Davis (whose postponed-from-last-year New Year's Eve party has been rescheduled this year, to the delight of those invited), Bob and Mary Foster, Elnora Hansen, Bennette Kidd, Eleanor Mansfield, the Gordon Mattesons, Jack and Tula O'Dowd and Carlos and Betty Ronstadt.

Ralph and Ethel Bilby (she has chosen Christmas green satin with lace and iridescent sequins trimming the top) have invited the Harry Camerons, Mundey Johnstons, Leon and Marge Levy, Harold and Peggy Steinfeld, and the Harold Warnocks to the party.

Green is also Betty Stant's choice - her gown is a Maurice Rentner.

Table decorations for the Service League of Tucson's annual Tea Dance on Dec. 15, 1963 take shape under the watchful eye of Wallace Diers (right), decorations chairman.  Committee workers with her amid the happy angel centerpiece are (left to right) Mrs. Shirley Dolph, Mrs. Fred Landeen, and Mrs. Robert J. Brooks.

November 1963.  Lending a helping hand with invitations for the annual Christmas Tea Dance sponsored by the Service League of Tucson Inc., are Diana, 11 and Greg Diers, 14, and Col. Edward M. Strode.  The dance is planned Sunday, Dec. 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Pioneer Hotel.  Mrs.  Wallace Diers, mother of Diana and Greg, is co-chairman of the decorations committee, and Mrs. Strode is in charge of invitations.   The dance is open to the public, and proceeds go to the league's Homemaker Service.

McKalip is co-chairman of the event.  Other committee chairmen are Mrs. John Brooks, special activities; Mrs. William H. Brand, decorations; Mrs. Richard K. Burke, admission tickets; Mrs. Gerald Hauer, hostess; and Mrs. Clyde A. Mowrey, tickets.  Colorful ribbons denoting win, place and show will be awarded to the women wearing the prettiest hats.  Members may be contacted for tickets.  The party is for the benefit of the Service League's Homemaker Service project.

The Chapter House as it was in the 1960s.  It has been changed but is still in use today, housing the assistance League Thrift Shop.
