Volunteers ... Working Together for Tucson

Assisteens® Auxiliary

Assisteens is an auxiliary of Assistance League of Tucson.  Membership begins with a young woman's freshman year in high school and continues through her senior year.  Assisteens, guided by Assistance League Advisors, elect a chairman and a governing body, develop a budget, organize a fundraiser which has been an annual spring fashion show, and participate in philanthropic programs in the Tucson community.  The Assisteens Calendar lists the dates of the meetings and events for this year.  Participation in Assisteens develops personal growth, leadership skills, and civic responsibility.

Assisteens' main philanthropic program is titled "Assisteens Helping Tucson Teens."  This program funds mini-grants (between $1,000 and $8,000) for middle school teachers.  Areas eligible for funding include art, music, or physical education in Tucson Title I middle schools.  Funding for this program comes from the annual fashion show.

During the year, Assisteens participate in additional philanthropic activities. The members work in the Thrift Shop and they help assemble the kits for Starting Over Supplies.

In October, they make Halloween decorations for local assisted living facilities.  In November, they bring canned food to contribute to the Tucson Community Food Bank.  In December, they participate in the Stuff the Bus toy drive, sponsored by Tucson's Channel 9 to benefit the Salvation Army.  Assisteens purchase toys and caravan down to the Stuff the Bus location to donate them.  Throughout the year, Assisteens are required to volunteer four times for local Tucson charities; they help at fundraisers or just volunteer to work for a day at the charity.

Seniors are thanked for their years of work in Assisteens at Assistance League's annual Tux 'n Boots® gala.  Each senior is recognized at the gala and her plans for the future are presented to Assistance League of Tucson.

To apply for membership in the Assisteens, please complete the Assisteens Membership Application Form.  Joining Assisteens is fun and rewarding, but it does require a commitment of time and resources so please review the requirements listed on the application.  To apply you must be an incoming freshman.  Sealed applications are drawn at random and 22 applicants are invited to be members as described in the Application Process Guide.
